I just finished watching Whisper of the Heart, a Japanese animated film produced by Studio Ghibli, my absolute favorite producer of movies. It's a story about a junior high school girl who finds out that all the books she's checked out from the library were previously checked out by the same person, a boy in her grade. It's basically a romance movie, but it is done very well in a not at all cheesy sort of way. Though it is also a movie about self discovery, about what she wants to do with her life. She's at an age where everyone is taking tests to determine which high school they get into, but she still doesn't know what she wants to do with her life. All the interactions are very believable and it flows quite nicely. Like all Studi Ghibli movies, it is very beatifully animated with a fantastic soundtrack to accompany with it. I've seen pretty much all their movies, and this one ranks pretty high up there along with Spirited Away.
Studio Ghibli recently released another film called Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea which is done in a very different style, giving it a sort of watercolor and pastel look. I can't wait for it to be brought over here.
Their movies are weird in that all their main characters are children, with a majority of them being young girls. However, they are all very mature characters who basically have to make very adult decisions.
I wish there were more movies as good as these.
